New Mexico Junior College (NMJC) recently hosted two exciting events that showcased the creativity, talent, and dedication of its Cosmetology Department. Both events were held in McLean Hall, drawing in students, faculty, alumni, and community members.

On Sept. 25, 2024, the NMJC Cosmetology Department opened its doors for the Legacy 30 event, a celebration of 30 years of beauty and creativity fostered at NMJC. Held at the Cosmetology building in McLean Hall, this open-house event paid tribute to the history and growth of the department. It honored both past and present directors, faculty, and the many accomplished students who have become successful professionals in the beauty industry.

Led by Director Joni Ochoa, the Legacy 30 event reflected on the long-standing tradition of excellence that the NMJC Cosmetology and Barbering Department is known for. "We are still on cloud nine," said Ochoa. "These two events were about bringing awareness to our community, as we are the community's college. We assess the value of community involvement by showcasing our students' skills and talents, reminding everyone that we are still here, and growing."

The next day, Sept. 26, 2024, the NMJC Cosmetology hosted a Dia De Los Muertos Senior Hair Show. This vibrant exhibition allowed senior students to showcase their skills in hairstyling, makeup, and overall creativity through this themed project inspired by the traditional Mexican holiday. The show highlighted the technical skills and artistic abilities students have developed over their time in the program and brought the community into the world of what new stylists will soon offer.

Professor Vance Onsurez, who spearheaded the event, shared his passion for creating memorable shows that allow students to demonstrate their abilities: "I try to put together hair shows themed around holidays or unique concepts, encouraging students to push their creativity, strength of nerve, and limitless talents."

Director Ochoa applauded Onsurez’s commitment to the department’s legacy of creativity, adding, "Vance hosts two shows each academic year, these events allow us to promote success through learning and provide the community with an inside look at the quality of education here at NMJC."

"There will always be a reason to celebrate NMJC Cosmetology and Barbering," said Onsurez. "Whether it’s each semester, yearly, or every decade, we will continue to acknowledge and applaud the remarkable work of our students and faculty. These events have solidified the NMJC Cosmetology Department as an asset to the community, showcasing the skills and passion that continue to drive its success into the future. I feel that Ochoa along with the support of the team, the acknowledgment of 3 centuries of success and amazing achievements could not have been more awesome and feel more rewarding. Personally, it's a true privilege to be working alongside this group of not just powerful and wonderful women\Educators but NMJC alumni.”
