The New Mexico Junior College (NMJC) Cosmetology Department recently hosted two vibrant events, showcasing the diverse talents and cultural heritage of its students. On April 18, the department held its Barber Battle event at the McLean Hall Cosmetology Salon, followed by a Quinceañera Hair Show on April 29.

The Barber Battle event brought together barbering talents from the region. Under the leadership of Sarah Sodd, Professor of Cosmetology, and the support of Joni Ochoa, Director of Cosmetology, the event was a resounding success. Students demonstrated extraordinary skill and creativity in various barbering techniques. Attendees were able to experience artistic hair designs and precision styling. The event also served as a platform to raise funds for scholarships, with NMJC Barber students raising $400. “I am so incredibly proud of the successful outcome of our first-ever barber battle.” said Sodd. Plans are already underway for future editions of the Barber Battle, promising even more excitement and innovation in the world of barbering. “Seeing our Barber students shining, interactive, and excited makes you realize that our non-traditional teaching methods become retention in their learning.” said Ochoa.

NMJC Cosmetology Department dedicated their Hair Show to the celebration of Hispanic heritage. The event displayed level 4 student’s creations of quinceañera-inspired hairdos on willing models, accompanied by lively mariachi music by Javier Galvezy Jr. Directed by Vance Onsurez, Professor of Cosmetology, the show aimed to honor the tradition of the quinceañera, a significant rite of passage in Hispanic culture. With eight models and the participation of all level 4 Cosmetology and Barber students, they learned to work as a team and showcase their skills. This Hair Show was a testament to the department's commitment to cultural inclusivity and student engagement.

Onsurez expressed his pride in the cultural significance of the Quinceañera Hair Show. "As a proud Latino, this show was particularly meaningful to me," said Onsurez. "It was an experience to remember, I have never been more proud.

Both events received enthusiastic support from participants, volunteers, and attendees, highlighting the NMJC Cosmetology Department's dedication to fostering talent, creativity, and cultural appreciation.
