ON-CAMPUS HOUSING SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES

Purpose

In an effort to provide more students the opportunity to live on campus, the New Mexico Junior College Foundation established a residential scholarship in 2024. Students who live locally and afar may apply while enrolled (new and continuing students) at NMJC. The process aims to ensure fairness, transparency, and efficiency in the allocation of funds to eligible students.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Enrollment Status: Applicants must be enrolled as full-time students at NMJC during the academic year for which they are seeking housing assistance.
  • Financial Need: Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need, which will be determined based on student response to the financial need prompt in the scholarship application below. All residential NMJC students who feel they need financial assistance to enroll or remain at NMJC are encouraged to apply.
  • Academic Standing: Applicants must maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by NMJC, an accumulated GPA of 2.0 each semester.
  • Residential Requirement: Applicants must express a genuine need for on-campus housing due to factors such as the desire for a supportive living environment conducive to academic success, distance from campus, lack of alternative housing options, etc.
  • Conduct: Applicants must have a satisfactory disciplinary record with no major infractions or violations of the student code of conduct.

Application Process

  • Submission Deadline: The deadline for submitting scholarship applications for residential housing aid will be communicated to students at the beginning of each semester (fall, spring and summer).
  • Application Form: Applicants must complete and submit the designated scholarship application form, which includes personal information, financial details, and a statement outlining their need for housing assistance.
  • Supporting Documentation: Applicants may be required to provide supporting documentation, such as proof of income, tax returns, or letters of recommendation, to verify their eligibility for housing aid.
  • Review Process: A scholarship committee comprised of designated staff members will review all applications and assess eligibility based on the established criteria.
  • Notification of Award: Successful applicants will be notified of their scholarship award via email or letter, detailing the amount of housing assistance they will receive and any additional requirements or conditions.

Aid Levels

  • Apartments - $1800.00
  • Double in Dormitories - $925.00
  • Single in Dormitories - $1300.00
  • Other amount determined by need or scholarship availability

Criteria for Aid

  • Demonstration of need provided through the applicant’s response to the financial need prompt on scholarship application. The response may include home and personal circumstances that would require assistance to stay in residential housing.

Renewal and Review

  • Annual Renewal: The Residential Housing Scholarships may be renewable annually, subject to continued eligibility and available funding.
  • Semesterly Renewal: Each semester all scholarship recipient’s academic and disciplinary status will be reviewed to make sure they are meeting the minimum requirements of the scholarship.
  • Review of Circumstances: In cases where a student's financial circumstances change significantly during the academic year, they may request a review of their housing aid eligibility. The scholarship committee will assess such requests on a case-by-case basis.

Appeals Process

  • Appeals Procedure: Applicants who are denied housing aid or are dissatisfied with the scholarship decision may request an appeal in writing, stating the grounds for their appeal and providing any relevant supporting documentation to the Dean of Students.
  • Appeals Review: The Residential Scholarship Committee will conduct a review of the appeal and render a final decision based on the merits of the case.

Policy Review and Updates

The scholarship guidelines for residential housing aid will be subject to periodic review and may be updated as needed to reflect changes in institutional priorities, funding availability, or regulatory requirements.

Conclusion

NMJC is committed to promoting access and affordability for all students, and this scholarship for residential housing aid reflects NMJC’s dedication to supporting students in achieving their academic goals.
