Scholarship Information
Listed below are student scholarships available through the NMJC Foundation. Please review the criteria to locate scholarships you are eligible for. Scholarship awards are dependent on availability of funds. (New Mexico Junior College Foundation requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 if a GPA is not specified in the scholarship criteria.)
Accounting
Scholarships for full and part-time students to cover cost of books, fees, tuition, campus housing, and meals
- Preference given to accounting majors demonstrating leadership qualities through their scholastic and community involvement
- Must have and maintain a GPA of 3.2
Agriculture
Scholarships for tuition, fees, books, room, and board
- Must be a full-time student
- Must have and maintain a GPA of 2.5
- Preference given to Lea County residents
- Preference given to students enrolled in the agriculture program or student athletes on the Rodeo team
Scholarships for tuition, fees, books, and housing (NMJC student housing)
- Must be enrolled full-time at NMJC
- Must be full-time and degree seeking
- Must have and maintain a GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
- Must be from a ranching or farming background or desire to enter agriculture related fields and / or soil or water conservation related fields
Funds are not available to any students who receive any type of scholarship or financial
aid (with the exception of the NM Lottery Scholarship) for the purpose of allowing
them to participate on the NMJC Rodeo Team
Additional information required to apply for this scholarship:
- Must submit a resume
- Must demonstrate pursuit of a coherent degree plan and should successfully complete
classes at NMJC that will result in the completion of a degree with an emphasis in
agriculture related fields and/or soil or water conservation related fields.
Such classes should be completed:
Basic Animal Science General Agronomy
Entomology
Feeds and Feeding Forage Management and Utilization
Introduction to Principles of Horticulture
Agribusiness Management Properties and Management of Soils
Architecture or related field
Automotive
Scholarships for students working toward an Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology
- Must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5
General support (which may include, but not be limited to housing, tuition, books, fees, supplies, general support (tools necessary for the program), food plan or similar expenses) of a student studying automotive mechanics, or if no applicant meets this requirement, the general support of a student from Southeastern New Mexico.
- Must have a 2.5 GPA
Scholarships for students accepted into the Ford ASSET program (beyond the first semester)
- Preference given to applicants that demonstrate financial need
- Must have and maintain a 3.0 GPA (exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis)
Student must be enrolled in class/classes pertaining to Vocational/Technical studies
specifically
For credit courses: Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology: ASSET;
Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology: ASEP; Associate of Applied
Science in Energy Technology; Associate of Applied Science in Welding; Energy Technician

Business
Scholarships for students studying Engineering, Business, or Science
- Awarded to students that don’t or can’t qualify for NM Lottery Scholarship
- Based on demonstrated need
- Must maintain 3.0 GPA
- Must be a full-time student
- Must be a non-traditional student (Scholarship may follow student as long as student continues to meet the scholarship criteria
Career Technology/Vocational Programs
- Must maintain 2.5 GPA
- Must be full-time
- Must be a NM resident
- Must be seeking a degree in an AA, AS, or AAS Degree or a certificate in a Career Technology/Vocational program
Scholarships - this award will be given to aid a local woman in attending NMJC so that she may better equip herself for the maintenance and support of herself and her family
- Must demonstrate financial need
- Must be pursuing vocational, technical, and / or academic training
- Must have a high school diploma or GED certificate
- Must have been out of high school a minimum of two (2) years
- Must be a resident of Lea County, NM - preference will be given to residents of Hobbs, NM
- Must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale)
- Must be a full-time student (enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours) - this requirement may be waived for special circumstances
Scholarships for tuition, fees, books, NMJC campus room and board, and/or program required expenses
- Must be a full-time student
- Student must be enrolled in class/classes pertaining to vocational studies
- Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA at NMJC
Student must be enrolled in class/classes pertaining to Vocational/Technical studies

Computer Information Systems
Scholarships for students seeking a degree in Computer Information Systems
- Must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5
- Must be a full-time student
For students who have graduated from a high school in Lea County
- Scholarship for a female who has graduated from a high school in Lea County and is taking prerequisites at NMJC to transfer into a Bachelor Degree plan to major in Computer Information Systems.
- Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA at NMJC.
Cosmetology
Scholarships may be used for tuition, fees, books, room and board, and / or program required expenses
- Must be a full-time cosmetology student (enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours)
- Must have and maintain 2.5 GPA
- Does not have to be a degree seeking student (For example, may be seeking a cosmetology license only.)
- Must obtain letter of recommendation from NMJC Coordinator/Professor of Cosmetology
- Recipient must volunteer 6 hours per semester at NMJC Cosmetology department events
Energy Technology
This scholarship may be used for tuition, fees, and books
- Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Must be a full-time student
- Must be a resident of Lea County or Eddy County
- Must be pursuing an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Energy Technology or Certificate in Energy Technology
Student must be enrolled in class/classes pertaining to Vocational/Technical studies

Scholarships (to be awarded for one year only).
- Recipient must be interested in and planning to enter the teaching field
- Must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Must have demonstrated good citizenship in the community in which they live
Scholarships may be used for tuition, fees, books, room and board, and/or program required expenses
- Scholarships are for students seeking a degree in education (Early Childhood to College)
- Must be a full-time student
- Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA at NMJC
Engineering
Scholarships for students studying Engineering, Business, or Science
- Awarded to students that don’t or can’t qualify for NM Lottery Scholarship
- Based on demonstrated need
- Must maintain 3.0 GPA
- Must be a full-time student

English
Equine
Finis Heidel Scholarship
Scholarships for tuition, fees, books, room and board.
- Students must be a graduate of a high school in Lea County
- Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Must be a U.S. citizen and resident of New Mexico
- ACT of 22 or above (or equivalent SAT or Accuplacer scores) required
- Must maintain 12 credit hours or more each semester
- Scholarship for fall and spring semesters only, no summer scholarship
- Failure to meet all criteria, withdrawal from school, failure to submit thank you letter, joining armed forces, any behavior resulting in expulsion or disciplinary action by school, any attempt at fraudulent use of funds and any other reasons at the discretion of NMJC Foundation are grounds to forfeit scholarship.
Non-Specific Field of Study
Scholarships for tuition, books, and supplies
- Restricted to Lea County students for academic or vocational studies
In the case of a major emergency or catastrophe, this fund will serve as an emergency fund for a person or persons who are or who choose to become NMJC students.
Scholarships for tuition, fees, and books
- Must be a current recipient of a Chase Foundation Scholarship (Chase Foundation of Artesia, New Mexico)
- Must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA
- Must be a full-time student
This scholarship may be used for tuition, fees, and books
- Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Must be a full-time student
- Must be a resident of Lea County or Eddy County
- Must have completed 20 hours at a college or community college
- Must be working toward an Associate Degree, the University Transfer Program, or a two-year career or technology certificate
General support (which may include, but not be limited to housing, tuition, books, fees, supplies, general support (tools necessary for the program), food plan or similar expenses) of a student studying automotive mechanics, or if no applicant meets this requirement, the general support of a student from Southeastern New Mexico.

Scholarships to degree seeking or certificate seeking student(s)

- Student must not qualify for needs-based financial aid as determined by FAFSA
Scholarships for tuition, fees, books, and / or campus housing
- Must be a high school graduate or received a GED through an approved program
- Placement test scores must show an ability to benefit from college course work
- Must be pursuing an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science Degree
- Must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 hours
- Must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5
Scholarship may be used for tuition, fees, books, room and board, and / or program required expenses
- Must be a Lovington High School Graduate with a 3.5 GPA
- Must enroll in NMJC the Fall Semester immediately following graduation from Lovington High School
- Must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.5 GPA at NMJC
- Must have a declared major, file a degree plan at NMJC, and enroll in classes on the degree plan
- Must be a full-time student as required by the degree or certificate
- Must be pursuing an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science Degree or one or two-year career or technology certificate
- Must NOT qualify for need based financial aid as determined by FAFSA
- Scholarship is renewable for up to four semesters by recipient if the above criteria are maintained
Scholarship (freshman students only)
- Must be a Hobbs High School graduate
- Preference given to a recipient of an Athletic Letter of Intent during their Senior year in high school
- Must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Must be a full-time student
Scholarships for tuition, fees, and books
- For students who do not qualify for financial aid due to lack of a high school diploma or GED or low ASSET scores
- May be full-time or part-time, in state or out-of-state
Scholarships for tuition, fees, and books
- Must have and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA
- Must be full-time student
- Renewable for up to four semesters
- Must be resident of the Hobbs News-Sun circulation area (Lea County, Seminole, Denver City, or Plains)
- Preference given to employees or relatives of employees of the Hobbs News-Sun provided such applicants meet all other criteria
- If offered in the NMJC curriculum, the recipient is required to take a journalism class

- Second preference will be a graduate from one of the other four high schools located in Lea County
Scholarships to graduates of Eunice, Hobbs, Lovington, or Tatum
- Must be a sophomore enrolled for 12 or more hours
- Must have and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
Scholarships to Lovington High School graduates
- Must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0
Scholarship to the student with the highest GPA making application to the school as an incoming freshman.
- Must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.2
- Financial need is not a criterion for this award
- In the event of multiple students having the same high GPA, preference shall be given to the student who demonstrates a well-rounded involvement in extracurricular activities.
Scholarship may be used for tuition, fees, and books
- Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5
- Must be enrolled in at least 9 hours
- Must have a declared major
- Financial need is not a requirement
Scholarship for tuition, fees, and books
- Must maintain a minimum of 2.5 GPA
- Have/Must carry a minimum of 6 hours per semester
- Must be a non-traditional student
- Must not qualify for needs-based financial aid as determined by FAFSA
- Must be a Eunice High School Graduate
- Must enroll in NMJC the Fall Semester immediately following graduation from Eunice High School
- Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8
- Must be enrolled for a minimum of 9 hours

- Student must be a graduate from a high school in any of the following counties: Lea County, NM or the following TX Counties: Andrews, Borden, Coke, Culberson, Dawson, Gaines, Howard, Loving, Martin, Pecos, Reeves, Scurry, Terry, Ward, Winkler, and Yoakum.
Scholarships for tuition, books, fees, room and board
- Must demonstrate financial need
- Must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5
- The award may be given to the same student for up to four full semesters, provided the student remains eligible.
- No funds shall be expended for athletic scholarships or athletic program expenses.
- Must be full-time undergraduate (in good standing)
- Must demonstrate financial need
- Preference given to students who are: Graduates of high schools located in West Texas anywhere west of a line drawn between Wichita Falls, TX to Laredo, TX or graduates of high schools located in southeastern New Mexico.
Scholarships for tuition and books
- Must be U. S. citizen
- Must be current resident of New Mexico
- Must be NM high school graduate or GED recipient from a NM Dept. of Education program
- Must demonstrate financial need and academic achievement
- Must maintain a GPA of 3.0 for a maximum of two semesters (scholarship may be awarded to student who does not meet this requirement under special hardship circumstances)
- Must be enrolled a minimum of 6 hours (if working full-time), 9 hours (if working part-time), and 12 hours (if not employed)
- Must acquire a Letter of recommendation from an individual within the title industry
Persons not eligible for this scholarship:
- Members of the NM Land and Title Association or their immediate families
- Employees of NMJC (or the NMJC Foundation) or their immediate families
Scholarship shall be awarded to a different recipient annually for any education-related expenses
- Must be enrolled in any certificate or associate degree program at any grade level
- Must demonstrate financial need
- Must have and maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA
- Must be a New Mexico resident and a United States citizen or permanent resident

- Must have and maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
- Must be a full-time student
- Preference given to graduates of Hobbs High School (Hobbs, New Mexico)
Scholarships for NMJC credit program and/or an NMJC Workforce Development training/certificate program
- Preferred minimum 2.0 GPA
Scholarships for tuition, books and fees
- Must have and maintain a 2.5 GPA
- Must be a high school graduate or GED recipient
- Preference given to children of city employees employed by one of the cities in Lea County, NM. In addition, the city employee (parent) must be eligible for overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) definitions. Children of city employees classified as executive professional or administrative under the FLSA definitions are not eligible to apply. (Employment by parent will be confirmed by NMJC Foundation Staff.)
- Second preference given to graduates of any high school in Lea County.
Scholarships for tuition, fees, books, and campus room and board
- Student must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA
- Must have and maintain minimum 2.0 GPA
- 1st Preference: Upward Bound students or students that have been in a UB Program at one point either at NMJC or elsewhere
- 2nd Preference: First generation college students
Scholarships for tuition, fees, and books
- Students must be a non-traditional student
- Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.1
- Hobbs High School graduate
- Must have and maintain a 2.5 GPA
- Must demonstrate financial need
Nursing
Scholarships for full-time and part-time students to cover books, fees, tuition, campus housing, and meals, or travel for educational purposes
- Students accepted into the Nursing program or an allied health field shall be given preference
- Must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5
This scholarship is offered to promote the retention of qualified nurses in the Lea County area for the benefit of our citizens and medical community.
- Must be accepted into the Nursing program
- Must have an acceptable GPA
Scholarships may be used for tuition, fees, and required book expenses
- Scholarships for full-time students who have been accepted into the New Mexico Junior College Nursing Program, are enrolled in nursing classes, and are seeking an Associates of Applied Science will be given preference
- Students classified as full-time (minimum of 12 credit hours) participating in the men’s basketball program will be given secondary preference
- Additional criteria for this scholarship:
- Must have and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and / or 21 ACT composite score
- Must have graduated from a New Mexico high school o Must be a current resident of New Mexico
- Must be attending courses at the NMJC Hobbs campus
The scholarship will be awarded for a maximum of four semesters based on continued
eligibility. If applicable, the recipient should also be awarded the New Mexico Lottery
- Lea County high school graduate
- Scholarship to a student accepted into the NMJC Associate of Applied Science in Nursing Program or accepted into the UNM at NMJC/NMNEC Bachelor Degree Nursing Program or
- Scholarship for a female who has graduated from a high school in Lea County and is taking prerequisites at NMJC to transfer into a Bachelor Degree plan to major in Computer Information Systems.
- Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA at NMJC.
- Must be accepted into the Nursing program
- Must be a resident in one of the following counties: Lea (NM), Eddy (NM), Gaines (TX) or Yoakum (TX)
- Must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0
Scholarships to students accepted into the Nursing program
- Must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5
- Must demonstrate financial need
- Must be accepted into the Nursing program
Scholarships for female students who have been accepted into the NMJC Associate of Applied Science in Nursing Program and are in the second year of the program
- Must be a Lea County resident
- Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
Scholarship for the full cost of tuition, fees, and books
- Must be accepted into the Nursing program
- Must be full-time student
- Must have and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA
- Recipient must sign a commitment letter to work at Nor-Lea Hospital for at least one year for each year as a recipient. (The commitment letter will be provided by Nor-Lea Hospital.)
- Must be accepted into the Nursing program
- Must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0
Scholarship to cover tuition, fees, books, and other related program costs up to $2,500. The first year award should be $1,500 with the scholarship renewable after the first year. (The monetary commitment of this scholarship may vary depending on the availability of funds.)

Rodeo
Scholarships for rodeo athletes, roping specifically
