Cosmetology Haunted House
November 13 — Hobbs, NM. On October 31, 2003, over 400 people came to the “Halloween Spirits are Calling” haunted house presented by the NMJC VICA Cosmetology students. Maria Vick, Professor/Coordinator of Cosmetology said, “The Cosmetology Department used to hold a haunted house back in 1999, but we stopped doing it. I guess you could say it came back by popular demand.” Vick also said she received several compliments from the public that this was the best haunted house in Hobbs.
Popular demand is right; over $1500 was earned in ticket sales and donations people made for baked goods. Vick said she had a lot a great sponsors; one that she would like to single out is Q Systems. “They donated black lights, strobe lights, fog machines, and a fantastic laser light. These extras really added to the effect,” said Vick.
Of course, no haunted house would be complete without horrid monsters to scare people. All the cosmetology students donated their own time to help with this event. Student volunteers all agreed, “It was very fun, and we made a lot of money to help us when we go to the VICA skills competition in Albuquerque,” said Samantha Jones. Tawny Peeby said, “It was definitely a fun and terrifying experience for the public!” Shelby Gowen, Professor of Cosmetology, probably summed with one simple sentence, “It was a great time and a great fund-raiser!”
