September 13 – Hobbs, NM. New Mexico Junior College will host a Radioactive and Hazardous Materials Committee (RHMC) meeting on September 20 in the Bob Moran Multipurpose Room from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m.
The RHMC handles legislation in regards to environmental issues.
Local issues on the agenda for the September 20 meeting will be a status and permit report on the National Enrichment Facility by Marshall Cohen, Vice President of Communications and Government Relations for Louisiana Energy Services, as well as Dean Kunihiro, Senior Vice President for Licensing and Regulatory Affairs of Waste Control Specialists.
During the 2006 year, the RHMC has centralized its focus on three areas including Los Alamos National Laboratories, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), and the Environmental Protection Agency. Additionally, the committee will hear testimony on issues relating to the mining, oil, and gas industry as well as septic tank regulations and prevention of food-borne illnesses.
Local members of the committee are Senator Gay Kernan, Senator Caroll Leavell, and Representative Donald Bratton. Numerous other state Senators and Representatives comprise the committee, including Senator Phil Griego, Chair, and John Heaton, Vice-Chair.
