NMJC Professors Receive National Recognition

Kay Goad and Patty Emmerich photoJune 21 – Hobbs, NM. Two New Mexico Junior College professors have been awarded medals simply for doing what comes naturally.

Dr. Patty Emmerich, Professor of Government and History, along with Kay Goad, Professor of Biology, were named as 2006 recipients of the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Community College Leadership Program Award. NISOD is an outreach and service branch of the College of Education at the University of Texas at Austin.

This year, the approximately 600 participating NISOD presidents from the continental United States, Bermuda, Canada, and Mexico, were asked to submit names of individuals that their colleges wished to recognize for teaching excellence, based on select criteria. The Excellence Award recipients were then invited to attend a four-day recognition ceremony at the 28th Annual International Conference held May 28-31 in Austin.

In addition to being treated to several days of “renewal and celebration” featuring food, fun, music, and inspiration, the recipients enjoyed a video presentation and awards booklet honoring them for their outstanding classroom accomplishments. They were also presented with medallions cast in their honor.

For both NMJC professors, the honor was humbling and exciting. Emmerich was especially pleased to discover that the event did more than simply recognize honorees. “The NISOD Conference reinforced my belief that education can be fun. In example: read history like a storybook. How could someone not like it? It’s all about people!”

NMJC President Steve McCleery, who nominated the women, is not only appreciative of the positive way they represent the college, but also of the way in which they impart information to students. “When professors such as Patty and Kay teach, they convey much more than general information. In addition, they generate enthusiasm and appreciation for a field of learning they’re truly passionate about. That’s what makes an outstanding teacher, and we’re extremely proud that they’re right here at New Mexico Junior College providing our students with the very best educational experience possible.”
