NMJC Recognizes Outstanding Students

Award Ceremony photoApril 27, 2006 — Hobbs, NM. At a standing-room-only event at New Mexico Junior College on Tuesday, April 25, fifty-two students were honored for their achievements during the 2005-2006 academic year. Packing the lobby of the Ben Alexander Student Learning Center, several hundred people watched as one instructor after another stepped forward to recognize individual student accomplishments at the 34th Annual Outstanding Academic Achievement Awards ceremony.

In addition to receiving public kudos, students were honored with multi-faceted crystal awards by their presenting instructors. Designed and engraved by students from Garry Wilson’s Computer Assisted Drafting and Design (CADD) classes, the awards took approximately a month to complete using the college’s laser engraving machine. In addition to the crystal award, recipients were also given a dog tag / key chain engraved with their names and disciplines.

Some students were fortunate enough to receive more than the crystal award. Several lucky welding students received welding supplies, and several computer design students received thousands of dollars of software for their efforts. One theater major, graduating sophomore Nathan Miles, was presented with a check for $1000 to be used at the 4-year college or university of his choice. According to John Rice, Director of Performing Arts at NMJC, who presented the check, Miles is an extremely deserving recipient, thanks to his exceptional contributions to the success of a number of theatre productions.

Family and friends weren’t the only ones excited about the event. “What I loved about tonight was that this is a celebration of excellence, from excellence in the classroom, from a teacher’s standpoint, and especially from our outstanding students,” said NMJC President Steve McCleery.
