NMJC Cosmetology Prepares Students
2/23/2007 3:54:57 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. The Cosmetology Department at New Mexico Junior College has helped prepare 10 students who are in their fourth and final semester of training for issues they will encounter once they graduate NMJC and begin their careers.
"When students come into the cosmetology program, they all want to open and own their own salons. Throughout their training and education, they realize how much work actually goes into opening their own salons. The students realize there are so many other important issues that have nothing to do with beautification, but with business decisions," explained Maria Vick, Coordinator/Professor of NMJC's Cosmetology Department.
To help prepare these students, who will soon face these real-life decisions, a panel of community professionals came out to the NMJC salon for a question-and-answer forum. Gary Beal with Leavell Insurance, Gary Don Reagan with Reagan & Sanchez PA, and Beth Darland with ProCuts were among the professionals who offered these students real-life guidance.
In the forum, students learned about issues such as business plans, professional insurance, legal issues associated with self-employment or working for a firm, and job opportunities available to them once they complete their training.
"The students were very motivated and eager to learn about these issues that they will face in the salon business. Starting your own business is a big responsibility and not a step to be taken without serious planning. It's crucial for a cosmetologist, who aspires to be a salon owner, to have knowledge of business principles, bookkeeping, business law, insurance, and salesmanship. I learned new information from the professionals myself," summarized Vick about the forum experience.
