NMJC Foundation Hosts Annual Golf Tournament

(Hobbs, NM)  On Saturday, June 12, and Sunday, June 13, the New Mexico Junior College Foundation will host its annual golf tournament at Hobbs Country Club.

Building on the tradition of the former Jim Spence Memorial Golf Championship, the NMJC Foundation Golf Tournament will provide Shotgun Starts at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on both days, with a field limited to the first 60 teams. Lunch is provided both days. Team fees for the 2-person teams are $400, and teams are flighted after the first round.

Saturday begins with a 2-person scramble, and Sunday features a 2-person Best Ball (select drive). Payment per flight is $2,000 ($800, $600, $400, and $200).
Long-Drive, Closest-to-the-Pin, and Putting-Course contests are scheduled, and Mulligans are available.

According to Tina Kunko, Accountant / Controller for the NMJC Foundation, the transition from the Jim Spence Memorial Golf Championship, which was begun in 2000 by Janice Spence to honor the memory of her late husband, will allow the Foundation to help fund additional endowments, scholarships, and programs. “Thanks to the extreme success of the Jim Spence Memorial Golf Championship and the generosity and hard work of Janice Spence over the last ten years, numerous students have been given the chance to earn a college education here at NMJC,” said Kunko.

“This transition, however, will expand the opportunities available to both sponsors and students alike, and it ultimately becomes a win-win for everyone involved,” she said.  “While still honoring the wonderful tradition and spirit of the Jim Spence tournament, the new name will more accurately reflect the broader scope of the Foundation.”

Currently, the NMJC Foundation manages 77 different endowments, annual scholarships, and program assistance funds totaling over $4.75 million.  The Foundation has awarded over $1 million in scholarships and workstudy to NMJC students over the past 16 years, along with $300,000 funded in program assistance. For 2010-2011 alone, the Foundation awarded $130,708 in scholarships, workstudy, and program assistance.
