NMJC SSS Program Hosts Recognition Luncheon

Student Support Services, a part of the federally funded TRIO program at New Mexico Junior College, hosted a luncheon on Thursday, May 6, to honor and recognize graduates and transferees from the program, along with those individuals who have made a difference in their lives during their time at NMJC.

Many SSS students expressed their appreciation to staff members for the help and support they received while pursuing their degree at NMJC. “SSS made the whole college experience easier and more enjoyable,” said graduate Paola Rodriguez. “SSS is amazing; thanks for everything” said others. “We couldn’t have done it without them,” said graduates Mary Brown and Bernadette Jenkins.  Computer Science graduate, Rick Davis expressed his thoughts in this way, “SSS has helped me tremendously and I am very happy to be a participant in their program.” Even attending parents expressed their appreciation for the SSS support provided to their first-generation college students.

In addressing all SSS graduates, Dr. Gayle Abbott, Director, told them “My wish for you in the fulfillment of your education and life goals is that you will keep your mind open to new ideas and perspectives, be kind, never take more than you give, and never be afraid to make positive changes in the world.”

SSS tutors were also honored. Throughout the Fall 09 and Spring 10 semesters SSS tutors provided 264 hours of supplemental instruction in English, Geology, Algebra, Biology, Literature, Communications, Anatomy & Physiology, ESL and Public Speaking. Many tutors had jobs and full time class schedules of their own, yet they were willing to share the knowledge in their area of expertise in order to help other students succeed. Tutors honored were:

Christian Castillo – ESL, Spanish-English

Rick Davis - Geology

Lorenzo Guzman – Algebra, Biology

Jerry Hamm – Biology, A&P, Microbiology

Maria Jenkins – ESL, Spanish-English

Gretchen Koether – Biology, Microbiology, A&P, Algebra

Maribel Martinez – History, ESL, Spanish to English

John Millan – Algebra, Astronomy, Public Speaking

Ashley Serna – Basic Math through Int. Algebra

Marie Wadsworth – English, Literature, Communications, Public Speaking

Dr. Regina Organ, Vice President for Students Services, challenged the students to continue to learn something new every day of their lives.
