NMJC's PTK Gears Up for Lea County Foster Children
12/6/2006 11:39:40 a.m. - Hobbs, NM. The Phi Theta Kappa organization at New Mexico Junior College will hold the annual Lea County Foster Children Christmas Party on Thursday, December 7, 2006, at the Lea County Event Center Banquet Hall.
According to Shelly Murphy, NMJC's PTK advisor to the student honor society, the group receives a list of names from Child Protective Services, which includes all Lea County foster children. The list of names, containing approximately 145 children this year, was distributed among the NMJC community, and "within the first and second day [of the list being distributed], all children were accounted for," Murphy states.
"The Christmas party is a way of showing we can do something to help those less fortunate," PTK Student President Shannon Watkins explains. Denise Rusk, PTK Student Secretary/Treasurer, further elaborates, "The party is going to be so exciting. To see the children's eyes light up and know that on that night, their hearts will be filled, is rewarding."
Murphy, a former NMJC PTK alumnus herself, credits many of the NMJC community members for the success of the program. "I think Mary Shelton, [Professor of Reading at NMJC], started this community service project at least seven years ago. This year, the Cosmetology Department has been a tremendous help, along with the Student Nurses Association. We've always received wonderful participation from the faculty and staff on campus. Not to mention that the meat for this year's party has been donated by 'the Fat Boys,' [local community members] who will also be doing the cooking for the event."
"It is very rewarding to talk about giving, but when you get to the party and see the children's reactions, you realize you've received far more than you ever gave," Shelton explains.
