NMJC Singers to Perform Assortimento!

NMJC Singers to Perform Assortimento! photo 11/10/2008 10:28:05 a.m. - Hobbs, NM. Audiences will have two opportunities in November to enjoy the NMJC Singers perform Assortimento! -- an assortment of choral music from around the world by noteworthy composers.

On Thurday, November 13, at 7:00 p.m. and on Sunday, November 16, at 3:00 p.m. in Watson Hall Theatre, Dr. Jeff Wall will conduct the NMJC Singers, accompanied by Michelle Walton on piano.

With songs ranging from the 16th century to the present, Assortimento! will showcase the music of such composers as Aaron Copland, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelssohn, Orazzio Vecchi, Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, Billy Joel, and others. Translations of foreign lyrics will be provided as a courtesy to audience members.

The 2008-2009 NMJC Singers are comprised of local students as well as one student from Europe. Sopranos include Ali Montanez of Eunice and Anna Palma of Hobbs. Altos include Allison Akridge and Kindra Akridge, both of Hobbs. Martinus Reuvekamp of Holland will sing tenor, with Henry Gutierrez of Lovington singing bass.

Wall, who serves as Professor of Music as well as Director of the NMJC Singers, is understandably excited about the event. Assortimento! will be the Lea County premiere performance for the NMJC Singers. The group was very well received on a recent performance tour through Carlsbad and Roswell. This small ensemble has tackled some very difficult choral literature this semester from major composers of different eras and genres," he said.

Wall also believes the audience will appreciate the effort. "These students have risen to the challenge set before them, and I believe they'll provide an evening of quality choral literature for the listening enjoyment of the audience. The NMJC Singers have truly set the bar high for growth in the vocal and choral music division of the Performing Arts Department."

General admission for Assortimento! is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens. Students are admitted free of charge. For more information about the NMJC Singers or Assortimento!, please contact Dr. Jeff Wall at 492-2845 or jbwall@nmjc.edu.
