NMJC Honor Society Members Get Dirty for a Good Cause

10/29/2008 3:37:36 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. What dedication! Members of New Mexico Junior College's Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society recently spent the day gathering trash to raise funds for their annual Christmas party for Lea County foster children. On Saturday, October 25, 2008, 11 volunteers picked up trash along Joe Harvey Boulevard in Hobbs.

Dana Havlink, Vice President of the PTK chapter at NMJC, contacted the Hobbs City Parks and Recreation office to find out if they could do this as a fundraiser. After receiving consent, the volunteers chose to work on Joe Harvey from Industrial Highway to Grimes Street. By the end of the morning, the group had picked up an amazing 58 garbage bags stuffed with litter from the sides of the highway.

"It was a lot of hard work," said Maria Vick, professor of cosmetology and sponsor of the PTK chapter, "but well worth it for the kids. The $350 that was raised will go a long way toward providing them with a bright spot in the Christmas season."
Volunteers included Vick, Dana Havlink, Leeann Holguin, Andrea Chance, Jessica McGraw, John McGraw, Jose Diaz, Damien Aguirre, Eric Primero, Katelynne Lindner and Taylor Lindner.

For more information about Phi Theta Kappa or to make a contribution to the Christmas party, please contact Vick at (575) 492-2850.
