NMJC Constitution Day Event Scheduled
9/11/2008 7:23:02 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. New Mexico Junior College and area schools throughout Lea County will partner in joint celebration of Constitution Day on Tuesday, September 16, at 1:30 p.m. in the Daniels Conference Room in the Ben Alexander Student Learning Center at NMJC.
According to Dr. Patty Emmerich, History and Government professor at NMJC and sponsor for the event, Constitution Day was established as a federal holiday in 2004 and provides an opportunity to educate new generations of Americans on ways that the U.S. Constitution has changed history. At the event, a number of Lea County students will be awarded prizes by the NMJC Foundation for their efforts in conjunction with Constitution Day.
Area residents may also register to vote at that time. According to Vicky Gann, sponsor of the College Republicans student club on campus, to register, persons need to be US citizens, 18 years of age on or before the day of the election, and a resident of New Mexico.
"Whether someone wants to register as a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or as a member of some other party," said Gann, "they need to sign up before October 7 in order to participate in this year's presidential election. We'll have tables set up for both the Democratic and Republican parties just outside the Ben Alexander Student Learning Center, weather permitting. This is a great opportunity for both parties to demonstrate to students how well the election process can work under our amazing Constitution."
NMJC's Constitution Day Celebration is open to the public and free of charge.
