NMJC Honors Employees
7/18/2008 3:57:53 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. Friday, July 11, 2008, was a special day at New Mexico Junior College's Pannell Library. For the fifth consecutive year, the Library honored four individuals who exemplify quality and professionalism at the annual "Celebrate Local Heroes at Pannell Library" event.
Sandy Hardin, Housing Coordinator; Neil Sudduth, Lead Journeyman Electrician; and Linda Connell and Pete Mladinic, professors of English, were this year's awardees. Prior to the event each individual had been named support, maintenance or faculty of the year, noting the exemplary service they provide to students and the community. Awardees are selected by campus members in the fall, with two faculty members traditionally chosen.
To celebrate, the Library commissioned the creation of posters bearing the image of each awardee with their favorite book. The posters, unveiled at Friday's notable ceremony, are modeled after the American Library Association's popular READ posters featuring celebrities and well-known public figures.
The large, framed works will be on display for a time on the first floor of the Library, after which they will be hung above the circulation desk. Additionally, smaller replicas of the posters were given to the honorees, and limited edition bookmarks, based on the posters, were available to those who attended the ceremony.
With the awardees positioned near their respective posters, approximately 85 community members and NMJC faculty and staff gathered as Dr. Sharon Jenkins, Director of Library Services, gave a brief presentation. The presentation was followed by a salad luncheon and door prizes. Jenkins and her staff were easily identifiable among the large crowd in attendance, thanks to their red aprons adorned with "READ" in white letters.
In attendance was the new Western Heritage Museum Education and Events Coordinator Mary Lyle. "I loved the READ aprons and would really like to have one for myself!" Lyle joked. "I appreciate how well done this event was. NMJC is very gracious in recognizing their employees, and I congratulate these four deserving people."
Hardin summed up the event neatly. "I was amazed at the turn out from the community for the ceremony," she said. "I saw friends of mine from Lovington that were here for the event. It was huge and it is difficult to express how honored I felt. This campus is full of employees who have a heart for students. To have been selected from this pool is an extreme honor. Having our posters displayed at the Library in the same fashion as the celebrity posters is just like icing, ice cream and a cherry on top of the cake."
