NMJC Holds First Annual Celebrity Free Throw-a-thon
7/23/2008 9:35:50 a.m. - Hobbs, NM. How is your free throw? Now is your chance to show it off for a good cause. The New Mexico Junior College Men's Basketball Team is hosting the first annual "Celebrity Free Throw-a-thon" on Thursday, July 31, 2008. This event will be open all day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in NMJC's Caster Activity Center gym. The "Free Throw-a-thon" will help raise funds for the basketball team for the upcoming fall semester.
Anyone can participate; a pledge sheet is the only requirement. Individuals or companies can sponsor a participant, or "celebrity shooter." According to Jerry Voight, assistant men's basketball coach at NMJC, each participant will be allowed 50 shots, with a pledge amount earned for every successful shot. "The 'Free Throw-a-thon' works the same way a walk-a-thon does," said Voight. "For example, a local company pledges $2 for each free throw you make out of the possible 50 shots. If you make 40 successful shots, the company will donate $80 to the team," he explained.
Many have already signed up for the shoot-out. Dr. Steve McCleery, president of NMJC, was one of the first to sign on. "We love to do things for our students, especially when it's something fun. I'm looking forward to this and hope that members of our community will continue to sign up and join us."
"This is a fun way to raise money for our kids at NMJC to acquire needed gear and equipment," said Voight. "We're excited to offer this, the first of hopefully many annual Free Throw-a-thons."
The minimum pledge amount is $1, and pledge sheets can be obtained from Jerry Voight, who will also be pleased to answer any questions. He can be reached at (575) 492-2755 or (940) 367-4003.
The "Free Throw-a-thon" is a great way to get out this summer, enjoy your Friday, and support our student athletes. Be a "Celebrity Shooter" at NMJC!
