Math Honor Society: "Have Your Pi and Eat It 2!"
3/22/2008 2:46:56 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. On Friday, March 14, New Mexico Junior College's chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society for two-year colleges, commemorated both Albert Einstein's birthday (March 14 or 3/14) and the mathematical constant pi (approximately equal to the number 3.14) with a pie-eating contest, along with a few other events.
Serving primarily as a fundraiser to help send club members to conferences and competition nationwide, the event, which was held in the Ben Alexander Student Learning Center, attracted dozens of students who were eager to compete not only in the pie eating contest but also in a scream contest which measured decibels, a guess-the-amount-of-candy contest, a mathematical problems contest, a paper airplane contest, and an Albert Einstein look-alike competition.
All contest winners' names were submitted for the grand prize, a $75 gift certificate to the NMJC bookstore, which was won by Andy Lewis, who also won $20 cash for his winning "Einstein look." Alex Rogan won the guess-the-amount-of-candy contest (457 pieces) and received the massive jar of candy as his prize. A number of other students won individual contests, including Jeff Heinz, who won the scream contest a considerable number of decibels higher than his fellow contestants.
Mu Alpha Theta members assisting at the event were Lizzette Bayona, Katelyn Jeter, Denise Lemry, Jessica McGraw, John McGraw, and Beverly Sanchez. Sponsors for Mu Alpha Theta are math professors Charlotte Schmitz, Shyla McGill, and Patricia Youngblood.
