NMJC Baseball Players Received Rawlings/NJCAA Specialty Awards
6/5/2007 4:14:08 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. Two of New Mexico Junior College's baseball players received National Junior College Athletic Association specialty awards. Adalberto Santos received a Rawlings/NJCAA Baseball Big Stick Award and Kevin Atkinson received a Rawlings/NJCAA Gold Glove Award.
Leading NJCAA Division I with a .528 batting average, Santos, a sophomore from Bronx, NY, was one of nine players to receive the 2007 Rawlings/NJCAA Baseball Big Stick Award. The award is distributed annually to the hitter that posts the highest regular season batting average in each on the NJCAA Division I geographical districts.
Voted as NJCAA Region V Defensive Player of the Year, Atkinson, a sophomore from Surrey, BC, was one of nine players to receive the 2007 NJCAA Division I Rawlings Gold Glove Award with a .997 fielding percentage. Atkinson recorded 371 putouts and 27 assists while only committing one error. The award is the benchmark of excellence and performance in the field for major leaguers; and, now for the first time in 2007, the best of the best at the collegiate and high school levels.
