6/19/2018 12:30:16 p.m. - Hobbs, NM.

Calling all artists, ages 5 through 95.  The Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame invites anyone who likes to draw with chalk to compete in the first Chalk Art Competition, Saturday June 30. The contest is part of the free Family Fun Day, in conjunction with its exhibitions “Chartering Freedom,” and “The Cowgirl Who Became a Justice: Sandra Day O’Connor.”

“Chalk Art is exciting to watch, because the art just materializes before your eyes,” said Mary Lyle, Director of Education. The theme of the contest is “America the Beautiful” and is being sponsored by Estacado Federal Credit Union.

“There is over $500 in prize money,” Lyle noted, “and the competition will be divided into three groups: Grades
K-5, Grades 5-12, and Adult.” The competition starts at 8 a.m. and finishes at 11:30 a.m. Each person will be assigned a 4’ x 4’ space on the sidewalk in front of the museum.

First place wins $75, second place wins $50, and third place wins $25 in each group. “We have a limited number of spaces available, so participants should sign-up early,” Lyle stated. The entries will be judged and awards will be presented at 1:30 p.m. The entry fee is $5, which covers the cost of supplies. Entry forms are available at the Museum or online at nmjc.edu. Entry deadline is 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 28th.  The public is encouraged to come out and watch as the art is created.

There are several other activities for Family Fun Day including food vendors, free balloons, and arts and crafts for the children from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  At 2:00 p.m., the movie, National Treasure will be shown. These activities are free to the public.
