Lady T-Birds Move Up to No. 1

The New Mexico Junior College women’s track and field team took part in the West Texas A&M Classic and Multi Meet over the weekend. The Lady Thunderbirds finished second overall, scoring 110 points. West Texas A&M finished first with 178 points while Baron County Community College (103 points) was third, Texas Tech (89) was fourth, and New Mexico Highlands (65) was fifth. University of the Southwest was 12th with six points.
With their success at West Texas, the Lady T-Birds moved up in the women’s outdoor track and field national rankings. NMJC was No. 2, but moved up to No. 1 in the nation with 657.99 points. In second, 121.68 points behind NMJC is Western Junior College Athletic Conference rival South Plains (536.31 points) which moved up from fourth.
Central Arizona was the No. 1 team, but fell down to No. 3 and Iowa Central slipped from No. 3 to No. 4.
While there, the Lady Thunderbirds had five athletes improve their national qualifying times and distances, Additionally, the Lady T-Birds also picked up a new national qualifier.
The Lady T-Birds improved two times in the 200-meter dash and one time in the 800-meter run. NMJC also improved distances in the triple jump and shot put. The new qualifier was in the steeple chase.
In the 200-meter dash, Christine Moss won the race, finishing in 23.45 seconds. Shian Hyde was third, turning in a time of 23.61 seconds. Both runners improved their national qualifying times.
In the 800-meter run, Esther Gitahi finished fifth overall with a time of 2:15.56. The top finisher ran a 2:12.00. Cathilee Mullings finished third in the triple jump, leaping 12.19 meters. Mulling’s teammate, Hanifah Abdul-Qadir, was second with a leap of 12.40 meters. Rochelle Frazier was second in the shot put with a throw of 14.52 meters. Gitahi, Mullings, and Frazier all improved their qualifying distances.
The Lady T-Birds newest national qualifier is Teresha Jacobs. Running the steeple chase, Jacobs finished third with a time of 12:05.75.
The Lady T-Birds will be back in action this weekend as they host the Ross Black Track and Field Open.
