Reporting Error to NJCAA Means Forfeiture of Games for NMJC
2/10/2017 2:56:46 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. New Mexico Junior College has been advised by the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) that the Men’s and Women’s basketball teams must forfeit two games each related to a rules violation in reporting the eligibility rosters for each team. The Association is requiring that the two games to be forfeited are past games with Odessa College and Western Texas College.
“This was a clerical error made at the college,” states Deron Clark, NMJC’s Athletic Director. “Due to some internal confusion, we missed the deadline to report the list of eligible basketball students to the NJCAA. When the error was discovered, we immediately corrected the problem by submitting the information, and self-reporting the oversite to the NJCAA National Office.”
“There was no intent to place an ineligible athlete on the floor for either team,” continues Clark. “We own the mistake. The forfeitures we are receiving are stated in the handbook for reporting violations. However, we are appealing the decision, since it was an honest mistake, and will hopefully hear from the NJCAA soon.”
Dennis Atherton, Vice-President for Instruction and Interim Vice President for Student Services, says, “We are very diligent about NJCAA regulations and do our best to insure they are followed. This is truly an honest mistake. Measures are being put in place so this does not happen again.”
The Thunderbirds athletic website will be changed to reflect losses against Odessa and Western Texas.
