NMJC Hosts Annual Golf Tournament

NMJC Hosts Annual Golf Tournament photo 6/8/2016 11:25:54 a.m. - Hobbs, NM. On Saturday, June 11th and Sunday, June 12th, the New Mexico Junior College Foundation will host the 17th annual NMJC Foundation Golf Championship at Hobbs Country Club.

The golf tournament helps fund scholarships for students, and provides financial support for NMJC programs. Over $182,500 in scholarships have been provided over the years from tournament proceeds, assisting about 287 students.

Shotgun starts are at 8:00 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, limited to the first 40 teams of 2 people each.  Lunch is provided both days.  Team fees for the 2-person teams are $400, and teams are flighted after the first round.   Saturday begins with a 2-person scramble, and Sunday features a 2-person Best Ball (select drive).  Prizes available for the Longest-Drive and Closest-to-the-Pin, plus a Hole-in-One opportunity on both days. Mulligans will also be available.

The tournament was originally created in memory of Jim Spence, a local car dealer in Hobbs.  When he died in 2000, Janice Spence decided to honor the memory of her late husband by sponsoring a golf tournament to help students at New Mexico Junior College.  Partnering with the NMJC Foundation to create an endowment for scholarships and programs, the endowment has grown to over $725,000, with a portion of the proceeds from each year’s tournament going to the endowment.

“This golf tournament is a major fundraiser for the Foundation,” states David Whitten, Chair of the 2016 tournament.  “The proceeds help pay for tuition, fees, and books so students can get a quality education without worrying how they can afford it.  We try to help students of all ages with this tournament.”

NMJC Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that currently manages over 94 different endowments,  annual scholarships and program assistance funds totaling over $7.124 million.  Over the past 23 years, the Foundation has awarded over $2.145 million in scholarships and work-study to NMJC students.  During the same time, the Foundation has funded over $582,000 in program assistance.

“The letters we receive from students are so appreciative, thanking us for helping them get an education with a scholarship,” says Whitten. “They want a better life with a better career. It really helps make a difference.”
