Student Orientation at NMJC
8/11/2014 8:19:32 a.m. - Hobbs, NM.
Over 500 students are expected with their families at New Mexico Junior College Saturday, August 16 for student orientation. Students are encouraged to be at Caster Activity Center, on the southwest side of the campus, before 9:00 a.m. to meet and sit with their advisors.
The day’s activities include a tour of the campus, receiving a free t-shirt and backpack filled with information and goodies from local businesses, and enjoying complimentary hotdogs, hamburgers, snow cones, popcorn and water.
Additionally, students can get their student ID, talk with various NMJC student club representatives, learn about the many support services available including tutoring assistance, and get one-on-one advice with their advisors. Students will also learn how to log in to their personal email and other online services. There will also be a drawing for four iPads.
“Student orientation is the time to acclimate incoming students to college life”, says DeMond Thomas, Coordinator of Intramurals and Student Activities. “No matter if they are coming straight out of high school, or have been working a while and now want to get their degree later as adults, we encourage anyone new to college to attend student orientation. We try to make it fun for them, but also show them the tools available to succeed.”
All students are also invited for evening fun over the weekend. Saturday night is “drive-in movie” night with an ice cream social, taking place in the dorm courtyard. Sunday night, Travelin’ Max, who performs a popular musical show on college campuses, will entertain students beginning at 5pm plus another movie that night, also in the dorm courtyard. All students can attend, whether they are living in student housing or not.
Classes begin at NMJC Monday, August 18. Students may enroll for classes through Friday, August 15 at 5:00pm for day, evening or online courses.
